The American Optometric Association’s definition of a paraoptometric is a person who works under the direct supervision of a licensed doctor of optometry.
Paraoptometric Staff
Paraoptometrics are allied health personnel who assist optometrists in providing their highest level of vision care to patients. Front office procedures, chair-side assisting, pre-testing, contact lens instruction, frame styling and fitting, and vision therapy are just a few of the many duties paraoptometrics perform while working directly with an optometrist.
Paraoptometrics may assist with:
* Optical dispensing
* Collecting patient data
* Administering routine, yet technical, tests of the patients’ visual capabilities
* Medical procedures such as photography, visual fields, and diagnostic laser equipment
* Office management
* Contact lenses
* Low vision
* Vision therapy
